  • THE FACILITIES OF A RURAL HOTEL IN ASTURIAS BECOME THE FIRST PLACE OF SPAIN TO HAVE A NEW TECHNOLOGY OF HYDROELECTRIC GENERATION

As a result of the Hidrotor project, in which the Asturian Energy Foundation took part, on 17 June the Sucuevas de Llano de Con Hotel inaugurated the first “Hidrotor” screw, built by the companies Zitrón and AZ Renewable.

The installed mechanism is a ‘worm’ or ‘Archimedes screw’ that takes advantage of the relief and water fall to generate, at this time, four kilowatts of electric power, although it has a capacity to reach six.

For now, the “Hidrotor” is not connected to the electricity grid and will become an experimental project in which its creators will be able to study with different variables and analyze ‘in situ’ both its operation, as well as possible incidences or particularities that may present the mechanism.

In addition to generating clean electricity, the “Hidrotor” is a safe and ecological machine for fish: in the event that a specimen reaches the flow that moves it, would go down inside without suffering any damage, rejoining the course Water.

  • THE XUNTA DE GALICIA ORGANIZES THE “IV RURAL SUPPLY DAY” ON WATER SUPPLY IN DISPERSED COMMUNITIES

The Ministry of Health last week hosted the Fourth Rural Supply Day, framed in the Rural Supplies project, beneficiary of the Life + Program of the European Commission.

The central objective of this project is to strengthen the sustainability of small water supplies in dispersed rural communities, guaranteeing, at all times, the quality of water for human consumption and to initiate the development of innovative demonstration actions that improve the Local population in the provision of water services through decentralized water supply systems. In Galicia, some 650,000 people consume water through the small supplies management model.

For this reason, Public Health has developed, within the framework of the Surveillance Plan of Environmental Risk Factors for Health in Galicia, the Public Health Waters Health Surveillance Program 2016-2020. This has among its specific objectives to know the sanitary quality of the water and the characteristics of the supplies with respect to the current regulation; Identify possible risks to minimize and eliminate them; Unify the risk management criteria related to the sanitary quality of water and supplies; And continue with the implementation and management of the National Information System for Consumer Water (SINAC) in Galicia.

The actions that are promoted through the Rural Supplies initiative will mean an improvement in the quality of supplies that supply water to small population centers, directly affecting the health of people in the rural population of Galicia.

The day was mainly addressed to technicians and municipal officials, and explained, among other things, the preliminary findings of the project Life Rural Supplies from the point of view of management and planning of supply in the rural dispersed Galician. It also revealed experiences of similar supply conditions in other countries, such as Ireland and Scotland, through the involvement of representatives of institutions involved in water management in both countries.

  • INAUGURATED THE ENERGY INSTALLATIONS OF A PROJECT FOR THE INTEGRATION OF MICRORREDES THAT IMPROVE THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF INDUSTRIAL PLANTS

Representatives of Jofemar Corporación and the National Center of Renewable Energies (CENER), inaugurated this morning in Peralta (Navarra) the energy facilities of the project LIFE Factory Microgrid, whose main objective is to demonstrate the suitability of micrredes in the industrial environment, especially in Areas with high penetration of renewables.

Specifically, the micro-grid inaugurated today includes a 120 kW wind turbine and 40 kW photovoltaic modules installed on the plant’s roof as generation sources, as well as Zn-Br flow batteries, developed by Jofemar Energy, with capacity for Store up to 300 kWh as storage systems. It also has six V2G two-way recharging points for electric vehicles and a fast recharge of 50 kW, which will supply 6 electric vehicles.

In addition, the pilot plant includes control software developed by CENER that allows a correct integration of the technologies and that together with the management strategies allows an optimal operation of the installation. The total installed capacity of the installation exceeds 160 kW, which will allow to generate more than 160,000 kWh of electrical energy of renewable origin to supply in this case the industrial plant of Jofemar and obtain an estimated savings of up to 65% of consumption Current energy.

This first real-scale demonstrator is one of the first experiences at national level and seeks to quickly and efficiently adapt industrial facilities to the 20/20-20 targets set by the European Union in terms of reducing CO2 emissions and energy consumption . With this project, the consortium has estimated that annual CO2 emissions will be reduced by more than 96 metric tons.

  • EUROPE TO INVEST 180,000 MILLION IN HYDROELECTRIC POWER UP TO 2030

The generation of electricity from hydropower has a long tradition in Europe. More than a century has passed since the first hydropower plants were built and since then this energy source has played a significant role in supplying clean energy to European consumers at very competitive prices.

In addition, the flexibility of hydropower plants helps to avoid price peaks in wholesale electricity markets. Taken together, these effects help to mitigate the upward trend in electricity prices, which end consumers have faced in many European countries in recent years.

According to a macroeconomic study carried out by DNV GL, hydropower supplies around 600 terawatt hours of electricity in Europe – 18% of total electricity generation – a figure that could reach 800 terawatt hours in 2050, which would Increase of 31%.

The same study makes reference to the important contribution of the hydroelectric sector in the European economy, since the creation of value by the European hydraulics companies and the equipment manufacturers supposes some 38,000 million euros – amount equivalent to the Gross Domestic Product ( GDP), and is expected to continue to grow in the future. The forecasts indicate that in 2030 the contribution of the water sector to the European GDP could be between 75,000 and 90,000 million euros.

The hydroelectric sector also contributes to job creation, since it directly and indirectly employs more than 120,000 citizens in Europe, a figure comparable only to employment generated in the European aluminum industry. The forecasts indicate that by the year 2030 the number of jobs in this sector could exceed 150,000. In addition, each job creates an annual value of 650,000 euros, which is eight times higher than the European average in the manufacturing sector.

But not only that, the study shows that a 10% increase in hydropower by 2030 would mean the creation of about 35,000 jobs in Europe, mainly outside the hydroelectric sector. In fact, the analysis shows that the employment effects in other sectors are significantly higher than in the hydropower industry itself, that is, each additional job in this industry creates up to seven additional jobs in the global economy.

In addition to electricity generation, many hydroelectric plants also provide additional benefits, including flood mitigation; The provision of drinking water for human consumption, irrigation and industrial needs; In addition to the promotion of tourism and navigation. According to the study, the multiple uses of hydropower represent an additional annual economic value of between € 10,000 and € 20 billion. In addition, due to the effects of climate change, these benefits could increase in the future due to greater need in water management and flood control.

Experts say that the existing hydroelectric capacity – about 200 gigawatts – is a very important asset for the Energy Union. It is a clean energy source that allows the integration of other renewable energies into the electrical system due to its flexibility and storage capacity, especially pumped power plants, which are considered very profitable and flexible for the storage of electricity since , Being able to transfer water between the two reserves at different levels, can offer electricity when the system needs it and store the surplus electricity from wind and solar plants.

To date, hydropower has played a key role in integrating renewables – especially wind and solar – in countries such as Denmark, Germany or Spain and, in some cases, based on the contribution of hydropower, In Norway, Austria and Switzerland.

DESIGN AN ELECTRICAL GENERATION EQUIPMENT WITH SPECIFIC RENEWABLE FOR THE AQUACULTURE
A high and inefficient energy consumption generates important costs that are reflected in the electric bill of an aquaculture production plant, clearly affecting the economic viability of the activity. Identifying the uses of energy and where the main consumptions are produced is a challenge already being worked in Andalusia.

After conducting an energy audit of aquaculture plants that develop their activity in estuaries, the LIFE AQUASEF project, focused on the environmental improvement of aquaculture activity through the development of eco-efficient technologies, has detected that the main consumptions are concentrated in pumping systems And the lighting required for the development process of the fish.

Following its goal of developing technological innovations, the experts of the AQUASEF project have designed and manufactured a compact photovoltaic equipment specific to the aquaculture sector, which allows to have an electrical supply point to connect small and medium loads in isolated locations of the conventional electric network . Among other advantages, this equipment avoids the use of generator sets and saves fuel costs and maintenance of the group.

In order to guarantee the efficiency and durability of this new compact equipment, very robust electronic circuits have been designed, equipped with layers of protection against saline environments, in order to operate for a much longer time without deteriorating. In addition, it has a small power system (150 W) and a higher performance (400W).

The promoters of AQUASEF expect that the application of all the technologies proposed in the project will allow a drastic reduction of the energy and liquid oxygen needs and with this a decrease of the costs of production.
